Shutdown Day is pleased to announce the return of the annual campaign for the year 2009. Like previous years, we have a global online Internet campaign. In addition, we are in the process of planning and finalizing a series of activities for gadget addicts, so that they can organize themselves to contribute to the better of society on that particular day.

Be part of one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the Internet. The idea behind Shutdown Day is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day

Stay tuned and watch this space, we gonna update soon!

Can you survive for 24 hours without your computer ?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of this project?
Shutdown Day was founded with the sole purpose of spreading awareness about the pitfalls and dangers that lie in the excessive use of television, computers, and computing equipment like game boxes, cell phones, music players, online social websites, etc. Our main purpose is to get people to think about how their lives have changed with the increasing use of the computer, and whether or not any good things are being lost because of this.

Shutdown Day calls people to shut down their computers for one whole day of the year and involve themselves in some other activities: outdoors, nature, sports, fun stuff with friends and family - whatever, just to remind themselves that there still exists an enjoyable world outside one's monitor screen.
Are you going to organize special off-line events on this day?
We are planning to organize a variety of special events for this day. These events will have one sole purpose: to spread awareness about the dangers and pitfalls of excessive use of computer gadgetry, and to provide a platform for addicts to enjoy activities outside their homes. They will be held in association with select organizations like the city councils and municipal corporations, school boards, and other private organizations.
Is Shutdown Day an anarchist idea?
Shutdown Day is not against the use of computers. We certainly believe that hospitals, schools, banks, stock markets, offices, and other computer-dependant entities should keep running on Shutdown Day. We only want the home-consumers to shutdown their computers. We are just saying that it would be nice to take time off for one day, to reflect and remember the other things in life that maybe we sometimes forget because we have come accustomed to a life dominated by our computer.
What Counts as a Computer?
Our main aim is to get people just to stop and think about the issues mentioned above, so it is personal to each individual. If your wife often suggests to you that you are having an affair with your PDA, then switch it off! If you need your cell phone to arrange fun things to do on Shutdown Day, please keep it on and use it. We think the internet is the thing that people will find most difficult to separate from for one day, so the main idea is that you keep your computers/laptops switched off, but if you use your PDA to access the net then perhaps you should switch it off too. We suggest you switch off your games consoles on 02 May 2009 too, but it's a personal choice.
How will you measure how many people actually shutdown?
Our goal is to get as many people taking part as possible. We hope that by 02 May 2009 millions of people will be ready to take part and our hope is that the effect is a noticeable for everyone on that day.

On 02 May 2009 we will have a chart on the shutdownday.org website displaying internet traffic and ask for people to post their comments, etc. about how they found life without their computer on Shutdown Day.
Are you going to measure how much energy is saved?
Everyone has their own reason for shutting down, for the founders of the Shutdown Day project, their personal reason was that they spend too much time at their computers and are concerned that they are both becoming too dependent upon them. We expect many people who shutdown will, instead of staying inside all day, get in their cars and travel somewhere and maybe this will counteract the energy saved from their computers being turned off?

For some people the reason for shutting down may be to conserve energy and spend one day helping to save the planet, which would be really great and we certainly welcome that kind of participation in the project. If anyone has any suggestions for measuring electricity use that day, please let us know and we will look into it. Whatever your reason is for shutting down, we support it.
