Shutdown Day is pleased to announce the return of the annual campaign for the year 2009. Like previous years, we have a global online Internet campaign. In addition, we are in the process of planning and finalizing a series of activities for gadget addicts, so that they can organize themselves to contribute to the better of society on that particular day.

Be part of one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the Internet. The idea behind Shutdown Day is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day

Stay tuned and watch this space, we gonna update soon!

Can you survive for 24 hours without your computer ?

Shutdown Day 2008 campaign results are out!

Shutdown Day is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the 2008 campaign. Our goal for this year was to venture further from our originally stated objective - that of challenging people worldwide to stay away from their computers and gadgets for all of 24 hours. This year we also wanted to organize special events that would help fellow addicts to take advantage of the spare 24 hours to contribute to the betterment of society.

The intricate details from the 2008 campaign are as follows:
  1. Shutdown Day, in co-operation with Ville de Montreal, successfully organized park and waterfront cleanup activities in the boroughs of Verdun, St-Laurent, and Cote-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace. Over 400 people participated in the Verdun cleanup drive, and results from the other boroughs are still to come in.
  2. About 14,000 people worldwide pledged to stay away from their computers.
  3. We received huge support from East European countries like Latvia, Hungary, Poland, and Lithuania.
  4. In terms of percentages, about 27% participants were from the United States, and about 5% from Hungary, Canada, Poland, and Latvia.
  5. We received wide media coverage by news sources like Reuters, Yahoo!, GlobalTV Quebec, TQS, Radio-Canada, The Globe and Mail, The Montreal Gazette, The Calgary Herald, R&D Magazine, IndieScribe, etc.
  6. Aesop Productions produced three great official videos for Shutdown Day:

We are very happy that we've managed to trigger a serious discussion about the pitfalls of the excessive use and abuse of the computers and the Internet. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people and organizations that have helped us in this campaign, namely Ville de Montreal, iWeb, and all the media outlets. We promise to return with more exciting and innovative ideas for the next year!
